What We Look At In Vegan Protein Powder
(And You Should, Too)

A lot of things that manufacturers claim are bad in competing powders can often times just be a preference, but some things are in fact objectively better to have. You should take the information in this list to see what is offered to find a powder that matches your personal preferences.

To find a powder that aligns closest with those preferences, we highlight some important aspects you should be aware of when choosing a vegan protein powder:

What we look for in protein powder: Value, Source, Certifications, Sweeteners, Gums, Flavors

Grams of Protein for Every $1 Spent

Grams of protein per serving means nothing.

How much protein you get per dollar spent means a lot more.

In terms of protein delivered:

Low End: Under 10 grams per $1
Typical: 11-19 grams per $1
High Value: 20+ grams per $1

This is only one measure of value, however, quality measures and multiple ingredients can lower the amount of protein you get per dollar spent.

Certifications

If you need something to be strictly vegan without even the smallest chance of containing animal product, stick with Certified Vegan powders.

If the product says “Vegan” on the label, it is most likely vegan. Certification only adds a third party guarantee.

If it’s “Plant Based” or “Vegetarian” with no vegan mention anywhere, be cautious when purchasing.

We like USDA Organic and Non-GMO Project certifications, as they represent a standard of food quality that goes beyond claims by the manufacturer, but a lot of quality protein powders don’t have these certifications.

Sweeteners

Sugar Alcohols – We don’t like them, they exist in some powders listed below in the form of Xylitol or Erythritol. Sugar alcohols are known to make people gassy and bloated, and even cause diarrhea in some.

Stevia – The most popular sweetener in protein powder. The most whole-food source of stevia is listed as Whole Stevia Leaf, Dried Stevia Leaf, or Stevia Leaf Powder. Processed forms are listed as “Stevia” or “Stevia Extract”.

Monk Fruit – Rising in popularity, monk fruit is very similar to stevia, but is reported to have an even stronger aftertaste, and that same “artificial” flavor some don’t like.

Sugar – The classic sweetener, most powders choose not to use sugar, and if they do it usually comes paired with stevia and/or monk fruit. Sugar also comes in the form of Rice Syrup Solids.

Protein Country Sourced and Processed

We contacted over 100 protein powder manufacturers, and the vast majority source their protein internationally.

Sometimes they don’t even know the country it comes from and just buy from suppliers.

A rule of thumb here is if they don’t specifically say on the label where they source their protein, then it’s coming from China (especially Pea and Rice protein).

On top of that, even if powder manufacturers source their protein from American and Canadian farms, they often ship the protein to China, process it into powder, then ship it back to America. Seriously.

Chinese sourced or processed protein can still be USDA Organic certified, and many manufacturers test every batch of powder they receive to make sure it meets a standard of quality. You make the call on how important this is to you.

Natural Flavor

“Natural” flavors aren’t really natural, the only thing that sets them apart from artificial flavors is that the source for the creation of the flavor chemical needs to be natural.

Even when the source is natural, that source doesn’t have to be the same as the flavor it’s producing (for example, you can derive Almond Flavor from something other than almonds)

Gums / Thickeners / Emulsifiers

This is a tricky ingredient, as many manufacturers will say gums act as “prebiotic fiber” or a “texture enhancer” and other manufacturers will call it filler or waste.

Our opinion is that gums, thickeners, emulsifiers, and texture enhancers aren’t bad as long as the price to protein ratio remains reasonable.

How to best enjoy plant-based protein powder

Plant-based protein powder, like any protein powder (whey included) simply doesn’t taste good.

When you isolate the protein within a food, you are taking away a lot of what makes it tasty.

For this reason, I like using protein powders as a small addition to a bigger smoothie or shake you’re making. The more stuff you add to your drink, the less you’ll even notice there’s protein powder in there.

Why most negative reviews aren’t valid

I read a lot of protein powder reviews, especially the negative ones, and the vast majority shouldn’t be taken seriously. They complain about:

The powder tasting like “plants”

Amazing how many times I’ve seen this considering they purchased a plant-based powder. Pea powder is going to taste like peas, soy powder is going to taste like beans, this shouldn’t surprise anyone.

It’s chalky

This is, again, the nature of plants. When you dry a plant and isolate the protein out of it, it’s going to be chalky. Many powders load up their protein powder with flavors, creamers, and sweeteners to hide this, but it will always be there in some form.

Not mixing well

This is again due to the nature of plant-based protein powder. Expecting protein to perfectly dissolve in liquids is expecting too much.

Including Stevia and/or tasting like “chemicals”

The most interesting negative reviews are the ones saying they hate stevia but buy a powder that clearly lists stevia as an ingredient. The “artificial” taste from stevia and monk fruit aren’t from any chemical process, that’s just how they taste.

Is plant-based protein a good option for non-vegans?

In my opinion: Yes.

Whey, and any milk product for that matter, doesn’t sit well in many people’s stomachs. It’s hard to digest, and can really upset your insides. Plant-based protein has the advantage of being easy to digest, and if you do happen to have trouble digesting it, there’s options that include enzymes, probiotics, or even go as far as to ferment the protein sources to make it even more digestible.

There’s also more options, too. You can select the kind of protein you want, what kind of sweetener, powders with added supplements/vitamins/minerals, and much more. Plant-based protein powders do a great job of providing a lot of variety.
